Redknapp accuses ‘so poor’ Xhaka of ‘sleeping’ in Arsenal’s 2-1 loss to Bournemouth
Jamie Redknapp was not at all impressed by Granit Xhaka's performance in Arsenal's 2-1 loss to Bournemouth on Sunday
Jamie Rednapp heavily criticised Granit Xhaka for his poor defending during Arsenal’s 2-1 Premier League loss to Bournemouth on Sunday afternoon.
Alexis Sanchez was left out of the Arsenal squad for the game as the speculation about his future at The Emirates continues.
After a goalless first half at the Vitality Stadium, Hector Bellerin broke the deadlock with a scruffy finish after he was put through on goal by Alex Iwobi’s impressive through-ball in the 52nd minute.
However, the home side rallied and Eddie Howe’s men equalised in the 70th minute when Callum Wilson finished as Petr Cech needlessly raced out of goal.
And the Cherries went ahead in the 74th minute when former Liverpool FC star Jordon Ibe fired home with Cech seemingly at fault again.
Former Liverpool FC star Redknapp was on punditry duty for Sky Sports during the game and he was not at all impressed with what he saw from Xhaka at the Vitality Stadium.
Redknapp told Sky Sports: “The person I want to mention here is Granit Xhaka.
“He’s your defensive midfield player. His responsibility as that ball goes over his head is to follow it and win the second ball.
“What he does is so poor. There’s the goal-scorer Jordon Ibe – Xhaka’s got to follow him and match him stride for stride.
“He doesn’t, he goes to sleep, it falls to Ibe and it’s 2-1.
“That is not good enough from a defensive midfield player.”
Arsenal must now dust themselves down as they look to get back to winning ways in the Premier League when they take on Crystal Palace at The Emirates next weekend.
The Gunners are now in sixth place in the Premier League table as they chase Champions League qualification this season.
