Frank Lampard sends honest message to Chelsea FC fans about Danny Drinkwater
Frank Lampard discusses Danny Drinkwater's start to life at Chelsea this season
Frank Lampard has admitted that it has been a “difficult” start to life at Chelsea FC for Danny Drinkwater since his summer move.
The England midfielder signed for the Blues from Leicester City back in August but has struggled with fitness issues and hasn’t been able to hold down a regular spot in the first team.
Indeed, Drinkwater has been limited to just three Premier League starts this season, scoring one goal in a total of 10 appearances in the top flight.
He has made 15 appearances in all competitions this term and started Chelsea’s FA Cup third-round clash with Norwich on Saturday evening.
However, Lampard has insisted that he is a big fan of the 27-year-old and is backing him to become an important player for the west London side.
Speaking to BT Sport on Saturday night, Chelsea legend Lampard said: “It’s been a difficult start for him.
“Trying to get into the team like Chelsea… he’s had a great career at Leicester and that’s why they bought him.
“He’s an all-round midfield player. He gives a bit of everything. He makes tackles and has a bit of grit in midfield but also [some] quality.”
Drinkwater will be hoping to start for Chelsea again when the Blues return to League Cup action on Wednesday night with the first leg of their crunch semi-final clash against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge.
The west London side, who are currently third in the Premier League table, drew 2-2 with the Gunners at The Emirates in the top flight last week.
