Pat Nevin is adamant that Chelsea outcast Michy Batshuayi will score goals if given a chance at Stamford Bridge or a new club.

The Belgium international has been bizarrely overlooked throughout most of the 2017-18 Premier League season so far.

The 24-year-old has scored a number of big goals during his 18 months at Stamford Bridge, including the title-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over West Brom back in May.

The former Marseille striker scored a dramatic winner in a 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid in Spain back in September to help Chelsea reach the Champions League round of 16.

However, Antonio Conte has only started Batshuayi in three Premier League games this season, while he has made a further nine substitute appearances in the English top flight.

The Chelsea second-choice striker has scored 10 times in all competitions this season, while he has netted four goals in 476 minutes in the Champions League and the Premier League.

Batshuayi has been linked with a potential switch to Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund before the close of the January transfer window.

Former Chelsea FC winger Nevin launched a lengthy defence of the Belgian forward.

“Clubs who use stats and Moneyball to figure out who they should buy must look at Michy and think wow!” Nevin wrote in his Chelsea FC column.

“Only two strikers in the Premier League have a better goals-to-minutes-played ratio than him this season in all competitions, Sergio Aguero, who has scored a goal every 95 minutes, and there is of course Harry Kane. Michy is currently on a goal every 100 minutes this season and these are the only three players at or under that number in the top flight of English football.”

“Whatever happens with Michy in the short- or long-term, one thing is absolutely certain, he will score goals if he is given opportunities by his team-mates.

“Everyone at the club was delighted for him after the Newcastle game.”

Chelsea FC signed Batshuayi in a £33m deal from Ligue 1 side Marseille in the 2016 summer transfer window a matter of months after Conte’s appointment as Jose Mourinho’s permanent successor.
