Antonio Conte has admitted that Ross Barkley has plenty of room for improvement after the midfielder’s Chelsea FC debut against Arsenal on Wednesday night.

The England midfielder has been getting used to life at Stamford Bridge after signing for the Blues from Everton at the start of the January transfer window.

Barkley came on in the 30th minute at The Emirates during Chelsea’s League Cup semi-final loss to Arsenal on Wednesday night when he replaced the injured Willian.

It was the 24-year-old’s first appearance of the season after he missed the first half of the campaign as he recovered from a serious hamstring injury.

Conte was pleased to see the midfielder make his debut for the west London side but he has warned Barkley that he still has a lot of work to do following his move from Everton.

Speaking to Sky Sports after Wednesday night’s game, Conte said: “I think he has a lot of space for improvement. He’s working with us for only two weeks.

“For sure, today I was forced to make this substitution. I think he can improve a lot.”

Conte is currently preparing his Chelsea FC team for their FA Cup fourth-round clash against Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

The Blues are bidding to return to winning ways after they were dumped out of the League Cup by Arsenal in midweek.
