Pat Nevin has warned Ross Barkley that he has his work cut out in trying to break into the Chelsea FC team this season.

The 24-year-old midfielder became the west London side’s first signing of the January transfer window last week when he joined the Blues from Everton on a long-term contract.

Barkley was heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in the summer but a switch failed to materialise before he signed a five-and-a-half year contract with Chelsea last Friday.

The England international has not featured at all for Everton so far this season due to a hamstring injury but he has been training at Cobham in recent days as he bids to prove his fitness to Antonio Conte.

However, former Chelsea star Nevin has warned Barkley that he will have to impress considerably to get into the Blues team ahead of the likes of Tiemoue Bakayoko, Danny Drinkwater and N’Golo Kante.

Speaking to Irish radio station Newstalk, Nevin said: “He has to get past Drinkwater, Kante, Bakayoko and even the likes of [David] Luiz.

“He is not a first-team starter. He is a distance away from it.”

Chelsea are currently preparing for their home Premier League clash against Leicester City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

The Blues are in third place in the Premier League table as they look to try and get as close to Manchester City as possible.
