Antonio Conte sends clear Chelsea FC message to Michy Batshuayi
Antonio Conte reacts to Michy Batshuayi's performance for Chelsea FC in the 4-0 victory over Brighton
Antonio Conte has revealed his delight at Michy Batshuayi’s performance in Chelsea FC’s 4-0 win at Brighton on Saturday.
The Belgian striker was handed just his third Premier League start of the season for the west London club on the South Coast as Conte’s men wrapped up an impressive victory.
Batshuayi started in the absence of the suspended Alvaro Morata and notched up an assist as two goals from Eden Hazard and strikes from Willian and Victor Moses wrapped up the three points for the Blues.
There has been plenty of doubt cast over Batshuayi’s long-term future at Chelsea, with Conte seemingly on the lookout for a new striker in the January transfer window.
Batshuayi was one of Conte’s first signings at Chelsea following his appointment at the club back in the summer of 2016, but he has failed to hold down a regular spot in the team since then.
However, Conte has admitted that he was delighted by the striker’s performance against Brighton at the weekend, even if he didn’t manage to get on the score-sheet.
Speaking to Chelsea’s website, Conte said: “I think Batshuayi played a really good game.
“He didn’t score but he worked very well for the team, he did what I asked him to do, and a number nine is an important player and important point of reference for our team. I was very satisfied with the work Batshuayi did.
“In my idea of football, our striker must be a point of reference so we can have these types of combinations.”
Chelsea are now preparing for the second leg of their crunch League Cup semi-final clash against Arsenal at The Emirates on Wednesday night.
