Pat Nevin: What I really think about new Chelsea signing
The Chelsea legend admits he has been disappointed with Ross Barkley's lack of progress
Pat Nevin has admitted that he has been disappointed with Ross Barkley’s lack of progress in recent seasons.
The England midfielder completed a £15m move to Everton from defending Premier League champions Chelsea last week.
Barkley has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal with the title holders as the attacking midfielder looks to kick-start his career.
The local talent broke into the Everton team under Roberto Martinez and the Spanish coach gave Barkley free rein to star in his team.
The 24-year-old scored 12 times in 48 games in all competitions during Martinez’s final season in charge.
Barkley struggled during Ronald Koeman’s brief tenure at Everton as his contract continued to run down at the Merseyside club.
Former Chelsea star Nevin delivered his verdict on Barkley’s stunted progress in the Premier League over the past couple of seasons.
“I would have hoped Barkley would have come on much further than he has,” Nevin told Irish radio station Newstalk.
“I watched him when Chelsea played Everton. You think he is the danger man but he’s not.”
The former Everton midfielder netted 21 times in 150 games in the Premier League.
Barkley was named Everton young player of the year in 2013 and 2014.
Barkley scored 27 times in 179 games in all competitions during his eight-season spell in the Everton first team.
