Antonio Conte sends message to Ross Barkley after Chelsea FC debut
Antonio Conte has a message for Ross Barkley after the midfielder made his debut for Chelsea FC against Arsenal
Antonio Conte has warned Ross Barkley that he will have to “work a lot” after the midfielder made his debut for Chelsea FC in the 2-1 loss to Arsenal in the League Cup on Wednesday night.
The midfielder has been getting used to life at Stamford Bridge after signing for the Blues from Everton at the start of the January transfer window.
Barkley started the game at The Emirates on the bench but was called into action after just 30 minutes when he came on to replace the injured Willian.
It was the England international’s first appearance this season as he bids to earn his place in the Chelsea FC team following a lengthy lay-off with a hamstring injury.
Conte was happy with Barkley’s commitment and desire but admitted that he wants to see more from the England international in the coming weeks and months.
Speaking at his post-match news conference at The Emirates on Wednesday night, Conte said: “Ross is a really good player and has great prospects and is very important for Chelsea, but he needs a bit of time to understand our football.
“He has to work a lot but I am very happy for his game, for his effort.
“I am very happy with the commitment of my players, they gave 120 per cent to try to reach the final.”
Chelsea FC must now dust themselves down as they prepare to return to action on Sunday afternoon with a home clash against Newcastle United in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
The Blues reached the final but lost to Arsenal last season.
