Edin Dzeko won’t be content to sit on the bench at Chelsea FC, Danny Higginbotham has warned Antonio Conte.

The AS Roma striker has emerged as Chelsea FC’s top target in the January transfer window to improve their attacking options.

Indeed, Chelsea FC were linked with some surprise names in recent weeks such as West Ham forward Andy Carroll and Burnley striker Ashley Barnes.

Dzeko is a plausible target for the defending Premier League champions given his previous experience of the English top flight.

The Bosnia international scored 65 times in 130 games for the Citizens in the Premier League and won two top-flight titles, the FA Cup and the League Cup.

Dzeko would provide cover for Spain international Alvaro Morata at Chelsea FC given the summer signing’s lack of confidence and growing fatigue in recent weeks.

Former Stoke defender Higginbotham warned Conte that Dzeko won’t be happy to sit on the bench at Stamford Bridge.

“Dzeko can’t play in the Champions League because he’s played for Roma this season,” Higginbotham told Sky Sports News on Friday morning.

“Will we see a chance in terms of playing two up front if Dzeko does come in? Will Conte look to go for a 3-4-1-2 instead of a 3-4-2-1? Only time will tell, but Dzeko won’t want to sit on the bench.

“He’s one of the main men at Roma and did really well at Manchester City.

“Maybe he’ll be told he’s got an equal opportunity [with Alvaro Morata] to prove himself, or do Chelsea go with two up front?”

Chelsea FC have won the Premier League title twice in the past three seasons under Jose Mourinho and then current boss Conte.

The Blues will take on La Liga giants Barcelona in the Champions League last 16 next month in pursuit of a first European crown under the Italian coach.
