Paul Merson slams Chelsea FC’s ’embarrassing’ transfer activity
The Arsenal legend questions some the players who have been linked with Chelsea FC in January
Paul Merson has criticised Chelsea FC for an “embarrassing” January transfer window – so far.
The defending Premier League champions have been linked with a move to sign a new striker in the current transfer market to ease the workload on struggling £58m summer signing Alvaro Morata.
The Blues were rumoured to be interested in injury-prone West Ham striker Andy Carroll, before a fresh fitness issue ruled out a potential switch for the 29-year-old centre-forward.
Burnley forward Ashley Barnes and Stoke City target man Peter Crouch were also named as potential targets for the title holders.
The Premier League title holders made the contentious decision to allow Diego Costa to leave for Atletico Madrid on loan back in September despite the Spain international being instrumental in their last two title successes.
AS Roma star Edin Dzeko is the latest name to be linked with Chelsea and the Bosnia international is certainly a more plausible target.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson delivered a withering verdict on Chelsea’s transfer activity so far.
“It’s a bit embarrassing with some of the names that are being touted around Chelsea Football Club,” Merson told The Debate on Sky Sports on Thursday night.
“They’re in the Champions League.
“It’s like they’ve found some change down the side of the sofa. Let’s see who they can get.”
Chelsea FC signed England international Ross Barkley in a £15m deal from Premier League rivals Everton earlier in the January transfer window.
The defending champions are in third place in the Premier League table.
