Chelsea FC are in a strong position to sign AS Roma defender Emerson Palmieri, according to reporter Kaveh Solhekol.

The defending Premier League champions are in the market to sign a left-back to provide cover for Spain international Marcos Alonso.

The Blues were linked with Juventus full-back Alex Sandro last summer but the English title holders appear to have been put off a deal for the Brazil international.

AS Roma’s Palmieri has emerged as their top target to strengthen Antonio Conte’s options at left-back and afford the Italian coach with the chance to give Alonso a well-earned rest.

Unlike some of the transfers at Chelsea over the past 18 months, Conte is reportedly a big fan of Palmieri so that Chelsea boss would be on board with the proposed £20m transfer.

The 23-year-old was initially thought to be part of a double deal that involved his Roma team-mate Edin Dzeko but the striker’s switch to Chelsea FC is looking more unlikely.

Sky Sports News reporter Solhekol talked up the chances of Chelsea FC signing Palmieri in the current transfer window.

“Problems with the Dzeko deal for Chelsea, but a deal for his team-mate Emerson Palmieri looks much more likely,” Solhekol told Sky Sports News on Monday morning.

“A deal has been agreed in principal for the left-back. He’ll cost around £20m. Antonio Conte is very keen to bring in some cover for Marcos Alonso at left-back.”

Chelsea won the Premier League title with two games to spare last term thanks in part to Alonso’s brilliant performances at left wing-back.
