Frank Lampard: Antonio Conte is right, Chelsea’s squad isn’t strong enough
The Chelsea legend believes the Blues do need to improve their squad, as Antonio Conte has demanded
Frank Lampard believes Antonio Conte has been proven right that Chelsea’s squad isn’t good enough.
The Blues are in third place in the Premier League table and 15 points behind runaway leaders Manchester City.
Chelsea are unlikely to defend their top-flight crown despite having won the title in two of the past three seasons.
Conte signed six players in the summer transfer window but the Italian coach missed out on top targets Romelu Lukaku and Alex Sandro.
Chelsea made the bizarre decision to sell Serbia international Nemanja Matic to bitter rivals Manchester United despite his vital role in their two title successes.
The title holders signed England international Ross Barkley in a £15m deal from Everton earlier this month.
However, Barkley was powerless to prevent Chelsea from losing 2-1 to Arsenal in their League Cup semi-final, while the Blues required 210 minutes and a penalty shootout to beat Norwich in the FA Cup third round.
The Blues have only managed to win of their last six games to fuel speculation surrounding Conte’s future at the west London side.
Chelsea record goal-scorer Lampard believes the Blues need to improve their squad to challenge Manchester City and Manchester United.
“There will be a concern this has gone public,” Lampard told the Evening Standard. “But the biggest issue is the results and it always will be. If the results go negatively, which they have recently, it is a worry.
“Of course, you want harmony between the coach and the club’s board but sometimes it is not always that simple.
“Conte is frustrated and this is his way of getting it out there. In a way he has been proved right because the squad doesn’t look strong enough to compete on all fronts.
“I’m sure they will have a discussion about buys now, and then who knows what will happen in the summer?”
Chelsea will take on Newcastle United in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday afternoon.
