Martin Keown: What I really think about ‘ordinary’ Chelsea FC

Martin Keown has described Chelsea FC as a “fairly ordinary team”.

The Blues crashed out of the League Cup on Wednesday night following a 2-1 loss to north London rivals Arsenal.

The Premier League title holders were eliminated following goals from Nacho Monreal and Granit Xhaka in the second leg of the last-four clash.

Chelsea FC have only managed to win one of their last six games in all competitions, while drawing four games.

The Blues even required a FA Cup replay and a penalty shootout to get past Norwich City in the third round.

Antonio Conte’s side are 15 points behind runaway leaders Manchester City, although the Blues are in third spot in the table.

Former Arsenal defender Keown believes Chelsea FC are struggling at the moment due to a lack of quality in Conte’s team.

“Chelsea FC are starting to look fairly ordinary,” Keown told the Daily Mail.

“They have played Arsenal five times this season — six if you include last season’s FA Cup final — and not managed to get the better of them.

“They do not seem to have the necessary quality at the top of the team. Everything looks like hard work for Chelsea FC at the moment.”

Chelsea FC, who beat Newcastle 3-0 to progress to the FA Cup fifth round on Sunday, have won the Premier League title in two of the past three seasons under Jose Mourinho and then Conte.

However, the Blues have struggled to match the spending power of Manchester City and Manchester United in recent seasons.

The Blues signed England international Ross Barkley in a £15m deal from Premier League rivals Everton earlier this month.
