Antonio Conte sent warning about new Chelsea signing
Chris Sutton discusses what he thinks about Chelsea's signing of Ross Barkley from Everton this month
Chris Sutton has warned Antonio Conte that it is now up to him to get the best out of Ross Barkley at Chelsea.
The Blues confirmed on Friday that they had agreed a deal to sign the 24-year-old midfielder from Everton for a fee reported to be worth around £15m.
Chelsea were heavily linked with a move to land Barkley last summer but the switch didn’t materialise as the player chose to stay at Everton and work on his recovery from a hamstring injury.
Barkley will now be hoping to stake his claim for a regular spot in the first team at Chelsea in the coming weeks and months as he looks to impress his new manager Conte.
Sutton is clearly a big admirer of Barkley but he believes that it is now up to the likes of Conte to make sure that the England star fulfils his potential at Stamford Bridge.
Speaking to BT Sport on Saturday, Sutton said: “I think [he’s a squad player for Chelsea] that’s why they’ve bought him.
“I just thought at the end at Everton he was under-appreciated by the supporters.
“I think there is a real player in there, I really do. It’s up to Antonio Conte and Chelsea to find that.”
Chelsea are currently preparing for the first leg of their League Cup semi-final clash against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.
The Blues head into that game on the back of their frustrating goalless draw with Norwich in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday at Carrow Road.
