Pat Nevin sends message to Ross Barkley about Chelsea transfer
The Chelsea legend urges Ross Barkley to stop trying to do everything on the football pitch
Ross Barkley needs to stop trying to do everything and learn to do the right thing, Pat Nevin has told the Chelsea signing.
The defending Premier League champions signed the 24-year-old attacker in a cut-price £15m deal from Everton at the weekend.
Barkley has signed a new four-and-a-half-year deal with the Premier League title holders to start a new chapter in his stalling career.
The England starlet was talked up as one of the Premier League’s next big talents when he burst onto the scene in 2012.
Barkley netted 21 times in 150 games in the English top flight for Everton, producing his best form under ex-Toffees boss Roberto Martinez.
The 24-year-old has struggled to find his verve over the past 18 months, which has prompted criticism of the England international.
Former Chelsea winger Nevin has some simple advice for Barkley following his bargain move to the defending Premier League champions.
“He tries to do everything. He doesn’t make the right decision,” Nevin told Irish radio station Newstalk.
“He doesn’t need to try everything. He needs to do the right thing.”
Chelsea have won the Premier League titles in two of the past three seasons under Jose Mourinho and then Antonio Conte.
The Blues will take on La Liga giants Barcelona in the Champions League last 16 next month.
Barkley scored 27 times in 179 games in all competitions during his eight-season spell in the Everton first team.
