Antonio Conte sends clear message to new Chelsea signing
Antonio Conte wants to see Ross Barkley improve his form in front of goal for Chelsea
Antonio Conte has told Ross Barkley that he wants to see the England midfielder score more goals following his transfer to Chelsea last week.
The west London side confirmed the signing of the 24-year-old on a five-and-a-half year contract on Friday last week as Conte secured his first signing of the mid-season window.
Barkley has not featured at all for Everton this season due to a hamstring injury but he has already begun training at Cobham since his switch to the west London side.
The 24-year-old will be hoping to stake his claim for a regular spot in the Chelsea team in the coming weeks as he looks to try and hold down a regular spot in the starting line-up.
Conte was asked about Barkley after Chelsea’s goalless draw with Norwich in the FA Cup on Saturday and the Italian manager wants to see the midfielder improve his form in front of goal.
Speaking at his post-match news conference at Carrow Road on Saturday, Conte said: “I think he has the quality to score more goals, but my main priority is to convince the player to work for the team.
“He is a very good player and we are happy to have him in our squad.”
Chelsea are currently preparing for the first leg of their League Cup semi-final clash against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.
The Blues are in third place in the Premier League table as they chase Champions League qualification this season.
