Chelsea told they have made the ‘bargain’ signing of the month
Steve McManaman is backing Ross Barkley to be a big success at Chelsea in the coming seasons
Steve McManaman has praised Chelsea for making the “bargain” signing of the month after completing a deal to bring Ross Barkley to the club from Everton.
The Blues announced on Friday that they had concluded a deal to sign the 24-year-old midfielder from the Toffees for a fee believed to be in the region on £15m.
The switch signalled Chelsea’s intent to significantly bolster their squad in the January transfer window as Antonio Conte looks to lead the Blues to a successful second half of the campaign.
Barkley has signed a five-and-a-half year contract with Chelsea and will be hoping to hold down a regular spot in the team in the coming few weeks.
And former Liverpool FC star McManaman believes that the move will end up being a great one for the west London side.
Speaking to BT Sport on Saturday, McManaman said: “It’s a bargain [for] a 24-year-old England international.
“We know how talented he is, he just needs refining. He needs to learn off some of the best.
“He’s going to play with better players, for a great manager… I think he’ll come on a ton, Ross Barkley. It’s a great piece of business by Chelsea.”
Chelsea are currently preparing for the first leg of their League Cup semi-final clash against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.
The Blues head into that game after the frustration of their goalless draw against Norwich City in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday, which means that there will be a replay at Stamford Bridge between the two sides.
