The Chelsea No10 reflects on Chelsea's penalty shootout win over Norwich City in the FA Cup third round on Wednesday night
Eden Hazard admitted Chelsea had to show great character to secure a 5-3 penalty shootout win against Norwich City in the FA Cup third round on Wednesday night.
The Blues welcomed the Championship side to Stamford Bridge looking to end a five-game winless run in the FA Cup and the Premier League.
Chelsea made the breakthrough in the second half when out of form Michy Bathshuayi made the breakthrough with 35 minutes to play in the cup clash.
The Blues were reduced to 10 men following Pedro Rodriguez’s sending off and Norwich equalised deep into added time thanks to Jamal Lewis’ late leveller.
Chelsea required penalties to get past Norwich after Willian, David Luiz, Cesar Azpilicueta, Victor Moses and Hazard dispatched their spot-kicks.
The Belgium international is looking to win his first FA Cup title since his move to Chelsea from Lille in a big-money deal in 2012.
Hazard conceded that Chelsea had to dig deep to find a way past Norwich after the defending Premier League champions were reduced to nine men.
“Now we can focus on the league and get ready for the next game against Newcastle,” Hazard told BBC Sport.
“It is the FA Cup it is not easy to win the game. We gave everything, at the end of the game we played 9 v 11 so we showed great character. We are happy but also sad that we lost two players.”
Chelsea won the Premier League title in 2015 and 2017 under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.
The Blues lost 2-1 to Arsenal in the FA Cup final at Wembley last term.
