Antonio Conte replies when asked if Chelsea will sign top 29-year-old striker from rival
The Chelsea boss appears to rule out the defending Premier League champions signing Alexis Sanchez this month
Antonio Conte has poured cold water on talk of Chelsea signing Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal in the January transfer window.
The defending Premier League champions have emerged as surprise targets to sign the Chile international from their bitter London rivals this month.
Sanchez was initially linked with a move to Premier League leaders Manchester City after the Citizens missed out on the South American’s signature last summer.
However, Manchester United have entered the race to sign the 29-year-old attacker and have put themselves in pole position to sign Sanchez.
Chelsea have also been linked with a late move to sign the South American despite Manchester United being clear favourites to complete a deal for the Arsenal star.
The title holders are in the market to sign a new striker given the well-documented struggles of Alvaro Morata over the past month or so.
Chelsea boss Conte has been reluctant to use Michy Batshuayi to give Morata a rest despite the Belgian forward scoring some vital goals during his Blues career.
Asked whether Chelsea will sign Sanchez in the January transfer window, Conte told his media conference at Cobham training ground on Tuesday:
“I don’t know but I don’t think so.”
The Blues won the Premier League title with two games to spare last term.
