Chelsea club chief delighted to sign 21-year-old with ‘immense potential’ on new deal
Chelsea club director Marina Granovskaia is excited by Andreas Christensen's potential
Andreas Christensen’s immense potential warranted a new deal at Chelsea, according to club director Marina Granovskaia.
The Blues defender has put pen to paper on a new four-and-half-year contract with the defending Premier League champions following his impressive start to the new campaign.
Christensen returned to the Chelsea squad following his two-season loan spell at Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach before his return to the Blues this summer.
The 21-year-old has managed to usurp the Brazil international in Conte’s team at the expense of Champions League and Premier League winner David Luiz.
Christensen has already made 16 appearances in the Premier League this season to become a regular member of Conte’s starting line-up.
Chelsea club director Granovskaia shed light on the defending champions’ decision to Christensen down to a long-term deal.
“This contract is reward for the excellent form Andreas has shown in the first half of the season,” Granovskaia told Chelsea’s website.
“He showed immense potential when he signed for Chelsea in 2012 and is now enjoying the benefits of the dedication and professionalism he has shown since.
“After two seasons on loan in Germany we were convinced he was ready to be a part of the squad this season and he has grasped the opportunity with both hands.
“We are delighted he has chosen to commit his future to Chelsea and we look forward to four-and-a-half more successful years with Andreas at the club.”
The Blues are in third place in the Premier League table and 16 points behind runaway leaders Manchester City with 16 games to go.
The English title holders will take on La Liga leaders Barcelona in the Champions League last 16 next month.
Chelsea won the Premier League title with two games to spare last term after Tottenham Hotspur finished seven points adrift of the leaders.
