Chelsea are set to fail in their bid to sign Andy Carroll on loan because West Ham United will only consider a permanent transfer, according to reports in the British media.

The London Evening Standard is reporting that the Blues are hoping to add another forward to their squad in the mid-season transfer window to provide back-up to Alvaro Morata.

West Ham forward Carroll has been touted as a possible target for the west London side, with Chelsea said to be interested in signing the 29-year-old on loan until the end of the season.

However, the report in the regional newspaper claims that West Ham United would only be willing to cash-in on Carroll in a permanent deal.

The same story says that the mere fact that Chelsea are considering Carroll as an option only serves to further highlight the fact that Antonio Conte does not have faith in Michy Batshuayi.

The story also claims that Batshuayi wants to leave Chelsea on loan this month in search of regular first-team football ahead of this summer’s World Cup in Russia.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are currently preparing for their FA Cup third-round replay clash against Norwich City at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.
