Dennis Wise urges Chelsea not to panic buy in January transfer window
The Chelsea legend believes Antonio Conte should resist the urge to panic buy in the January transfer window
Dennis Wise has urged Chelsea boss Antonio Conte to avoid the temptation to panic buy in the January transfer window.
The Blues manager has been linked with a number of players this month given his frustration at missing out on some top targets in the summer.
Chelsea were unable to get a deal over the line for Juventus left-back Alex Sandro, eventually adding Davide Zappacosta to their squad.
Manchester United managed to see off competition from Chelsea to sign Romelu Lukaku in a £75m deal back in July.
To further compound Conte’s frustration, Serbia international Nemanja Matic completed a £40m switch to Manchester United from the defending champions.
Chelsea are in third place in the Premier League table and 16 points adrift of leaders Manchester City to all but rule out retaining their title.
The Blues will take on La Liga giants Barcelona in the Champions League last 16 next month as the west London side look to win Europe’s top tier competition for the first time since 2012.
Former Chelsea skipper Wise doesn’t believe the Blues need to rush into potential deals for new players this month.
“I wouldn’t be forced into buying too many players right now. I would rather do it at the end of the season because people panic now,” Wise told The Debate on Sky Sports on Wednesday night.
“Chelsea don’t need to panic. They are in the Champions League and doing well in the cup.”
Chelsea have won the Premier League title in two of the past three seasons.
