Chelsea want to make top 26-year-old their second January signing – report
Chelsea want to sign Riyad Mahrez from Leicester City this month, according to reports
Chelsea boss Antonio Conte wants Riyad Mahrez to be Chelsea’s second signing of the January transfer window, according to reports in the British media.
The Sun is claiming that Chelsea are set to “step up” their pursuit of the Algerian winger following the confirmation of their signing of Ross Barkley from Everton on Friday.
Barkley signed a five-and-a-half year contract with Chelsea on Friday after completing a move to the west London club for a fee believed to be around £15m.
The move signalled Chelsea’s intention to bolster their squad this month, with Conte’s men currently third in the Premier League table.
Chelsea are reportedly now looking at bringing the 26-year-old Mahrez to Stamford Bridge, although the same article carries quotes from Leicester City boss Claude Puel, who insists that the Foxes want to keep hold of Mahrez.
Mahrez is widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s finest attacking talents and the Algeria international has scored seven goals and made seven assists in 22 top-flight games so far this season.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are currently preparing for the first leg of their League Cup semi-final clash against Arsenal on Wednesday night.
The Blues drew 2-2 with Arsenal when the two teams met in the Premier League last week.
