Jose Mourinho replies when asked about Man United signing Alexis Sanchez in January
The Manchester United manager opens up about the Red Devils' interest in Arsenal striker Alexis Sanchez
Jose Mourinho says he isn’t “unconfident” that Manchester United will sign Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal in the January transfer window.
The Chile international has less than six months remaining on his current Gunners deal to open up the possibility of Sanchez leaving the Emirates Stadium for nothing at the end of the season.
Arsenal, though, could sell Sanchez in the January transfer window to recoup some of the £35m that the Gunners paid La Liga giants Barcelona in the 2014 summer transfer window.
The 29-year-old was heavily tipped to complete a move to Manchester City this month after the Premier League leaders missed out on the South American forward last summer.
Manchester United have since moved into pole position to sign Sanchez in the current transfer window despite Sanchez’s previous experience of working under Citizens boss Pep Guardiola.
The Red Devils are rumoured to be willing to offer Sanchez and Arsenal more money than Manchester City for the former Udinese forward.
Speaking to his media conference about Manchester United’s pursuit of Sanchez following Monday night’s 3-0 win over Stoke City, Mourinho said:
“I am not confident, but also not unconfident. Just relaxed and we have the feeling that he is an Arsenal player.
“We have the feeling that he can stay there. But also the feeling that he can move and if he moves, I think we have a chance. But, I think most probably, a player like him has other big clubs interested. Who knows?
“I think him, Mr Wenger and Mr Gazidis [Arsenal’s chief executive], I think they know really what is going to happen. I have no idea to be honest.
“[On Monday] I was completely separate from all of that. I was focused on my match and not worried about anything else other than the match.
“I’m not going to speak about hypothetical siutuations, he is an Arsenal player and he can be an Arsenal player. But I feel I shouldn’t speak about him because he is an Arsenal player.”
Sanchez scored 24 times in 38 games in the Premier League last season.
The South American has won two FA Cup titles in three seasons at the north London club.
