Jamie Carragher sends message to Liverpool FC fans about Philippe Coutinho’s sale
The Liverpool FC legend believes Jurgen Klopp made the final decision on Philippe Coutinho's sale to Barcelona
Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool FC boss Jurgen Klopp made the final decision to sell Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona.
The Brazil international finally completed a reported £142m move to the La Liga leaders in the January transfer window following months of speculation surrounding his future at Anfield.
Coutinho’s exit came as a surprise given his continued importance to the Anfield outfit and Liverpool FC’s reluctance to sell the 25-year-old in the summer transfer window.
The South American playmaker scored 12 goals and made eight assists in 18 starts in the current campaign to prove his short-term commitment to Liverpool FC following his failed move to Barcelona in the summer.
Liverpool FC have earned a reputation for selling their best players at the Merseyside club in the past eight seasons following the departures of Javier Mascherano, Fernando Torres, Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling.
The club’s owners Fenway Sports Group have been criticised for cashing in on their best players under Kenny Dalglish and Brendan Rodgers.
However, Coutinho’s move to Barcelona is the first big departure since Klopp took over the reins of the Merseyside outfit in October 2015.
Former Liverpool FC defender Carragher believes FSG allowed Klopp to have the final say on Coutinho’s transfer to Barcelona.
“Selling Coutinho was Klopp’s decision not the owners – he’s a man of his conviction,” Carragher told Sky Sports. “He’s made a big decision.
“We’ll know at the end of the season whether it’s right or wrong, in terms of where Liverpool finish and if they win something. That result was a big statement – to get that result, it’s a big thing going forward.
“People certainly won’t be mentioning Coutinho over the next couple of weeks.”
