Gary Neville: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain adds ‘great value’ to Liverpool FC team
The Man United legend is impressed with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's impact at Liverpool FC
Gary Neville has praised Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for adding great value to the Liverpool FC team following his summer move.
The England international completed a £40m move to Liverpool FC from Arsenal on transfer deadline day to start a new chapter in his Premier League career.
Oxlade-Chamberlain turned down the opportunity to sign a new long-term contract with Arsenal or complete a short move across London to defending champions Chelsea.
Liverpool FC boss Jurgen Klopp used Oxlade-Chamberlain sparingly in the opening months of the season but the versatile midfielder has since become a first-team regular.
The German’s growing faith in the 24-year-old was illustrated on Sunday when Klopp named Oxlade-Chamberlain in his starting line-up for the visit of Premier League leaders Manchester City.
And the summer signing rewarded his manager’s trust with the opening goal from long range in a 4-3 victory over Pep Guardiola’s side as Liverpool FC became the first team to beat Manchester City this season.
Former Manchester United defender Neville was full of praise for Oxlade-Chamberlain after his impressive contribution to Liverpool FC over the past couple of months culminating in his goal against Manchester City.
“I said that I thought Liverpool would either make or break him,” Neville told his Sky Sports podcast. “The doubters were there, within the Liverpool crowd, and I think he’s gone a long way on Sunday to proving he can be someone who adds great value to this side.
“He has the tenacity, not just the skill and the talent, but the fight, the spirit to play for Liverpool. They wouldn’t accept anything less here. Arsenal is slightly different under Arsene Wenger, the flowing football, the freedom to play is almost the most important thing.
“But at Liverpool you have to apply that with the other side of the game as well. He did really well in both halves, he was tenacious, and it was a good goal for him as well.”
Liverpool FC are in third place in the Premier League table.
