Pat Nevin predicts where Liverpool FC will finish in the table
Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin believes Liverpool FC are in a strong position to finish in the top four with Virgil van Dijk in their ranks
Pat Nevin has warned Liverpool FC’s top-four rivals that Jurgen Klopp’s side must be taken seriously following the addition of Virgil van Dijk.
The Netherlands international completed a £75m switch to the Anfield outfit from their Premier League rivals Southampton earlier in the January transfer window.
Van Dijk scored the winner in Liverpool FC’s 2-1 win against Everton in the FA Cup third round at Anfield earlier this month.
Liverpool FC were unbeaten in 18 games before a shock 1-0 loss to the Premier League’s basement club Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium on Monday night.
The Reds remain in fourth place and two points clear of Tottenham Hotspur and a further five points ahead of sixth-placed Arsenal in the table.
Liverpool FC missed out on the chance to move level on points with Chelsea following their surprise defeat, while Manchester United remain six points clear of the Reds.
Former Chelsea winger Nevin believes Liverpool FC are strong contenders for a top-four finish with Van Dijk leading their back four.
“They now have to be taken totally seriously as a top four team,” Nevin told Irish radio station Newstalk.
“Before that I wasn’t sure whether they would make the top four because of the goals they leaked. He is the difference.”
Liverpool FC made Van Dijk the most expensive defender in the world following his £75m switch to the Anfield outfit from Southampton.
The Reds can make a swift return to winning ways with a trip to Huddersfield Town in their next Premier League game on Tuesday night.
