Phil Thompson attempts to explain Liverpool FC’s dramatic loss of form
The Liverpool FC legend believes the Reds have lost their way since a brilliant 4-3 victory over Manchester City
Phil Thompson believes the Liverpool FC players are guilty of believing their own hype following their 4-3 win over Manchester City earlier in January.
The Reds became the first team in the Premier League to beat Manchester City in the 2017-18 season following their seven-goal thriller at Anfield.
Liverpool FC lost their next top-flight outing following a 1-0 loss to the Premier League’s basement Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium last week.
The Merseyside outfit slumped to a surprise 3-2 loss to West Brom in the FA Cup fourth round at Anfield to continue to struggle in the cup competition under Jurgen Klopp.
Liverpool FC have lost ground on third-placed Chelsea FC after Antonio Conte’s side moved three points clear of the 18-time English champions before Tuesday’s win at Huddersfield.
Former Reds captain Thompson believes Liverpool FC have lost their way following their brilliant performance against runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City, although he was speaking before the 3-0 win on Tuesday night.
“I think too many of the players believed the hype after the City game and it is amazing that the wheels came off after beating Manchester City on New Year’s Eve last year,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
“The most worrying aspect is how we lost our way for the whole of January.
“Losing one game is a blip, but two games becomes a bit worrying, so everybody has to take responsibility to get out of it and ensure there is no repeat of how everything unravelled last year.”
Liverpool FC will take on Portuguese giants FC Porto in the Champions League last 16 next month as the Reds look to win Europe’s premier club competition for the first time since 2005.
The Reds are finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last season to secure a return to the Champions League.
