Phil Thomspon urges Liverpool FC to make ‘quality’ signing in problem position
The Liverpool FC legend wants Jurgen Klopp to sign a top-class goalkeeper
Phil Thompson has urged Liverpool FC to sign a “quality” goalkeeper to complete Jurgen Klopp’s exciting squad.
The Reds were 4-3 winners against Premier League leaders Manchester City last weekend after goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah ended the Citizens’ unbeaten run.
While Liverpool FC earned the plaudits for a rousing performance at Anfield, Klopp’s decision to start Loris Karius ahead of Simon Mignolet didn’t pay dividends.
Indeed, the German goalkeeper allowed his compatriot Leroy Sane to beat him at the near post in the first half to prompt criticism of the 24-year-old.
Alternatively, Mignolet has struggled to find consistency in the Liverpool FC team since his move to the Reds from Sunderland in 2013 to replace Pepe Reina.
Liverpool FC signed Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk in a £75m club record deal earlier this month to make the 26-year-old the world’s most expensive defender.
However, former Reds captain Thompson wants Liverpool FC to sign a proven goalkeeper to complement his big-name defensive signing.
“The squad as it is is good enough for a top four but they still require more quality, on top of Naby Keita coming in, to get closer to Manchester City,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
“I think Sunday proved the goalkeepers are not up to scratch.”
Liverpool FC haven’t won the Premier League title but finished in second place in 2002, 2009 and 2014.
The Reds are in third place in the Premier League table but 15 points behind leaders Manchester City.
