Martin Keown: New Liverpool FC signing has star quality
The Arsenal legend is impressed with Virgil van Dijk but warns the Liverpool FC star needs to win silverware
Martin Keown has warned Virgil can Dijk that his star quality will count for nothing unless the world’s most expensive defender helps Liverpool FC to win silverware.
Klopp completed a £75m deal to sign Van Dijk from Premier League rivals Southampton last week to finally address some of his defensive problems since taking over the reins at Anfield in 2015.
The Netherlands international will be tasked with improving a Reds defence that has conceded 25 times in 22 games in the Premier League, particularly struggling on the road in the current campaign.
Van Dijk earned a reputation as one of the best defenders in the Premier League over the past two seasons, although he spent six months sidelined with a knee problem in 2017.
The new Liverpool FC signing’s transfer fee has attracted some criticism given the Dutch defender has spent most of his career at Groningen, Celtic and Southampton.
While Keown believes Van Dijk has the quality to succeed at Liverpool FC, the former Arsenal defender warned the club record signing would ultimately be judged on his ability to inspire the Reds to silverware.
“You have to throw your players straight in to the side,” Keown told BBC Sport.
“It is a lot of money, but Virgil van Dijk, he has star quality. You have to make your mark when you go to clubs and win trophies.”
Liverpool FC will take on Manchester City in their next Premier League game on Saturday.
