Craig Bellamy believes that Liverpool FC must sign a new goalkeeper and a defensive midfielder in the January transfer window.

The Reds have already been busy this month, having secured a deal to land defender Virgil van Dijk from Southampton for a fee believed to be worth as much as £75m.

Philippe Coutinho also secured his move away from Anfield on Monday as his big-money transfer to Barcelona was finally confirmed this week.

With Liverpool FC widely reported to have received a transfer fee of as much as £145m for Coutinho, there is bound to be plenty of speculation linking the Reds with a host of players to sign this month.

And former striker Bellamy says that Liverpool FC must prioritise the signing of a defensive midfielder and a goalkeeper in the transfer window.

Speaking on The Debate on Sky Sports, Bellamy said: “I would prefer to have [kept] Coutinho. Van Dijk was a must.

“Liverpool have had defensive problems over the past few seasons. A goalkeeper is a must [and] they need a defensive midfielder.”

Liverpool FC are currently preparing for their crunch Premier League clash against Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday afternoon as they look to become the first team to beat the Citizens in the top flight this season.

The Reds are looking for revenge after their 5-0 thrashing at the hands of City at The Etihad back in September in the Premier League.
