The Reds are bound to be linked with a host of players in the coming days as Jurgen Klopp considers further adding to his squad following the arrival of defender Virgil van Dijk from Southampton.
Liverpool FC should have plenty of funds at their disposal after the Merseyside outfit agreed to sell Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona for a transfer fee believed to be worth as much as £145m.
It remains to be seen whether Liverpool FC will indeed make any more signings this month but Murphy clearly believes that a midfielder should be Klopp’s priority in the mid-season transfer window.
Speaking on The Debate on Sky Sports, Murphy said: “In the middle of the park, there is a gaping hold in midfield.
“He [Klopp] is letting Emre Can go at the end of the season.
“Liverpool need a powerful presence and a creator. There is always a leader, someone you can hang your hat on at Liverpool.”
Liverpool FC are currently preparing for their crunch Premier League showdown with Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
It will be their first official game since the confirmation of Coutinho’s transfer to Barcelona and the Reds will be out for revenge after Manchester City thrashed them 5-0 at The Etihad in the Premier League back in September.
Liverpool FC are currently in fourth place in the Premier League table as they chase Champions League qualification for the second season running.
