Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain gave Liverpool FC the lead with a cool finish early in the first half.
But Leroy Sane levelled for Pep Guardiola’s Premier League leaders shortly before half-time to make it 1-1 at the break.
Liverpool burst out of the blocks in the second half and Roberto Firmino put them 2-1 up in the 59th minute with a cool finish.
Two quick fire goals from Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah then made it 4-1 to the home side as Jurgen Klopp’s men ran riot in the second half.
Bernado Silva then pulled one back for the Citizens in the 84th minute at Anfield and Ilkay Gundogan netted in stoppage time to set up a tense finale on Merseyside, but the home side held on.
And former Manchester United defender Neville was particularly impressed by the attacking trio’s display for Liverpool FC against the Citizens.
Speaking during Sky Sports‘ coverage of the game, Neville said: “The work of Mane, Salah and Firmino was really good, in support of that midfield three.
“They put in a real shift but [did it] intelligently as well.
“Going [forward] at the right times, not going too early, waiting for each other…”
The win left Liverpool FC in fourth place in the Premier League table and two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.
The Reds return to action in the top flight with a home clash against Swansea City in the Premier League on Monday 22 January.
The Merseyside outfit are aiming to at least finish in the top four for the second season running under Klopp.
