Jamie Redknapp is tipping Virgil van Dijk to take Liverpool FC to the “next level” following his arrival at Anfield.
The Netherlands defender signed for the Reds at the turn of the year as Jurgen Klopp moved quickly to bolster his defensive options on Merseyside.
Liverpool FC were heavily linked with a move for Van Dijk in the summer but the switch failed to materialise, before he ended up signing for the Reds this month.
Van Dijk has already enjoyed a debut to remember with the Reds after having scored the winning goal in Liverpool FC’s 2-1 FA Cup win over Everton at Anfield earlier this month.
And former Liverpool FC midfielder Redknapp has issued his backing for the Reds’ transfer business this month following the arrival of Van Dijk at Anfield.
Speaking to Sky Sports, ex-Reds star Redknapp said: “They sold Coutinho to Barcelona for a huge fee, £146m, and have brought in Virgil van Dijk for £75m – a player they badly needed. Ultimately, they needed a centre-back more than they needed Coutinho.
“If they can get Van Dijk to the level they’re hoping they can get him to and he can be the leader they need in that defence, then he can elevate them to the next level. And then, next season, they can look to compete with Manchester City.”
Liverpool FC are aiming to at least match their fourth-placed finish in the Premier League last season.
The Reds ended up in fourth place last term as they secured Champions League qualification in Klopp’s first full campaign in charge at Anfield.
Liverpool FC will take on FC Porto in the last 16 of the Champions League next month.
