Alan Shearer: Liverpool FC need more signings despite Virgil van Dijk deal
The Newcastle legend doesn't believe Virgil van Dijk will be the answer to all Liverpool FC's defensive woes
Alan Shearer has warned Liverpool FC that more signings are required to improve Jurgen Klopp’s defence despite the addition of Virgil van Dijk.
The Reds signed the Netherlands international in a club record £75m deal from Southampton last week to finally land their top defensive target after 12 months of transfer speculation.
Liverpool FC made Van Dijk the most expensive defender in the world following his switch to the 18-time English champions despite the 26-year-old’s lack of experience at a top European club.
The 18-time English champions have conceded 25 times in 22 games in the Premier League this season to raise serious concerns about Dejan Lovren, Ragnar Klavan, Joel Matip, Alberto Moreno and Simon Mignolet.
In particular, Lovren, Mignolet and Moreno have been regularly criticised for their inconsistent performances which have cost Liverpool FC points after the past two or three seasons.
Former Newcastle striker Shearer warned Klopp that Liverpool FC need more defensive additions to finally end their problems at the back.
“Only West Ham and Stoke have conceded more goals away from home than Liverpool have,” Shearer told BBC One on Friday night.
“It doesn’t take a genius to work out where they need to improve. He [Virgil van Dijk] is obviously one area, the goalkeeper is another area. Van Dijk will make them better [though], there’s no doubt about it.”
Liverpool FC finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last term to secure a return to the Champions League following a two-season absence.
The Reds are on course to finish in the top four in consecutive seasons.
