Ian Wright names two Liverpool FC signings required to challenge for the title
The Arsenal legend believes Liverpool FC need a new goalkeeper and defender to challenge for the title next season
Ian Wright believes Liverpool FC need to sign a centre-half and a goalkeeper to challenge for the Premier League title next season.
The Reds eased to a 4-3 win against Premier League leaders Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday thanks to goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.
Liverpool FC are 15 points behind the Citizens despite producing some of the best attacking performances of the 2017-18 campaign following a return of 54 goals in 24 games.
The Reds signed Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk in a £75m club record deal in the January transfer window to address their imbalance at the back.
The 26-year-old scored the winner in a 2-1 win over Everton in the FA Cup third round at Anfield earlier this month but was sidelined for their seven-goal thriller with Manchester City.
Liverpool FC’s goalkeepers Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius have been heavily criticised over the past 18 months or so due to their inconsistent performances in goal.
Dejan Lovren and Alberto Moreno have also cost Liverpool FC vital points with defensive lapses to raise questions about their long-term future.
Former Arsenal striker Wright believes Liverpool FC need to sign a new goalkeeper and a new centre-half to be in a position to challenge for the title next term.
“If Liverpool can address the goalkeeper situation and sign another centre-half, they’ve got Naby Keita coming and add a couple more of that, they could be well up there challenging for the Premier League next season,” Wright told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“They’ve got a nucleus of a squad that is very good.”
