Danny Murphy has urged Jurgen Klopp to sign a complete midfielder to ensure Liverpool FC are able to go to the next level.

The Reds are in fourth place in the Premier League table but 18 points behind leaders Manchester City despite producing some brilliant attacking performances in the current campaign.

Liverpool FC reached an agreement to sign Naby Keita in a £48m deal from RB Leipzig at the end of the season last summer.

Keita has established himself as a top talent in the German top flight and the Guinea international is expected to significantly improve Klopp’s midfield options in the 2018-19 campaign.

For now, Jordan Henderson has been tasked with being Liverpool FC’s midfield fulcrum but the England star has proven rather limited in the middle of the park.

Former Liverpool FC star Murphy believes Klopp needs to secure a midfield signing in the mould of Steven Gerrard if the Reds harbour ambitions of reaching the next level.

“To go to the next level to compete with Chelsea, Man United and Man City, Liverpool need someone in the middle of the pitch who can open teams up and dictate tempo and play,” Murphy told The Debate on Sky Sports.

“You won’t compete unless you’ve got one. It’s the most important place in the pitch. The middle of the pitch is where games are won and loss. It’s a massive area where Liverpool need to look at.”

Liverpool FC finished in fourth place in the Premier League last season to secure a return to the Champions League after a two-season absence.

The Reds signed Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk in a £75m deal from Premier League rivals Southampton in the January transfer window.
