The Reds are currently on the lookout for a replacement for Philippe Coutinho after they finally agreed to sell the Brazil international to Barcelona this week.
Liverpool FC are believed to have raked in a transfer fee of as much as £145m for Coutinho’s sale, which would give them significant funds to strengthen with in the coming weeks.
The Merseyside outfit have already completed their first signing of the January transfer window after bringing in defender Virgil van Dijk from Southampton.
It remains to be seen whether Klopp will look to bring in a direct replacement for Coutinho this month or wait until the summer transfer window.
However, former Liverpool FC star Thompson believes that 28-year-old Borussia Dortmund star Aubameyang would be a great signing for the Reds.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Thompson said: “Maybe it [the Coutinho fee] should be used for an out-and-out striker and then Roberto Firmino can drop back and play the Coutinho role.
“Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is one who would be on my list and somebody you could get.
“It would certainly be that quality you’d be looking for, although he would need to have the right the work ethic. I’m not sure why he’s not been on more sides’ shopping lists.”
Aubameyang has been in top form this season, scoring 13 goals and making three assists in 15 Bundesliga appearances for Dortmund.
Liverpool FC are currently preparing for their crunch Premier League clash against Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
The Reds are out for revenge after Pep Guardiola’s men thrashed them 5-0 at The Etihad back in September.
