Liverpool FC should target Arsenal striker Alexis Sanchez to replace Philippe Coutinho if the Brazil international moves to Barcelona, Steve McClaren says.

The Reds are facing a fresh battle to keep the Liverpool FC number 10 at Anfield given Barcelona’s renewed interest in signing the South American playmaker.

Coutinho was linked with a move to Barcelona in the summer after the Catalan side made a bid in excess of £115m that would have seen Liverpool FC secure an £89m payment up front before add ons.

However, the 18-time English champions refused to entertain the possibility of Coutinho leaving the Merseyside outfit in the summer after Liverpool FC turned down the midfielder’s transfer request.

Sanchez has entered the final six months of his Arsenal contract to throw up the possibility of the 29-year-old leaving for nothing next summer.

The Chile international has been heavily linked with a move to Premier League leaders Manchester City and the Citizens remain favourites to sign the former Barcelona forward.

Former Newcastle boss McClaren believes Liverpool FC should consider signing Sanchez to replace Coutinho if Barcelona make a fresh approach worth around £160m.

“It’s difficult. Obviously there’s Sanchez at Arsenal and there might be a bit of movement there. But £160m, that’s a lot of money, you can buy a lot for that. Klopp will not want to lose this kind of quality. He wins games,” McClaren told Sky Sports News on Tuesday.

“I could see Sanchez [moving to Liverpool]. He will be ambitious and I think he’s that type of player who could replace Coutinho. But when you’ve got Salah, Firmino, Mane and Sturridge to a certain extent, you might not need to replace him that much.”

Sanchez had the chance to replace Luis Suarez at Liverpool FC in 2014 but the forward opted to move to Arsenal in a £35m deal from Barcelona.
