Phil Thompson predicts where Liverpool FC, Man United will finish this season
The Liverpool FC legend is backing Jurgen Klopp's side to finish in second place in the Premier League table
Phil Thompson believes Liverpool FC’s 4-3 win against Manchester City highlighted that the Reds are the second best team in the Premier League.
The Merseyside outfit became the first Premier League club to beat the Citizens in the 2017-18 season following their seven-goal thriller at Anfield last weekend.
Goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah sealed three points against Pep Guardiola’s side.
Liverpool FC missed out on the chance to hoist themselves up to second place for 24 hours after late goals from Iklay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva reduce their goal difference.
The Reds are in third place and three points behind Manchester United in runners-up spot, while Liverpool FC are level on points with Chelsea in the final qualifying spot.
Former Reds captain Thompson is confident that Jurgen Klopp’s side can beat Manchester United to a second-placed finish in the final months of the season.
“It changes all the time but based on how teams are playing, Manchester City are obviously first and then I think Liverpool have proved they are the second-best team in the league,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
“That’s not just because of Sunday’s result but because of their general play. That game showed the level they’re at, even without Philippe Coutinho and Virgil van Dijk.”
Liverpool FC finished in fourth place and secured a return to the Champions League in Klopp’s first full season in charge at Anfield.
The Reds signed the Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk in a club record £75m deal from Premier League rivals Southampton in the January transfer window.
