Gary Linker heaped praise on Jesse Lingard after the Manchester United midfielder continued his prolific run in Friday night’s 2-0 win over Derby County in the FA Cup third round.

The England international has been Manchester United’s most consistent player during the festive schedule to help the Red Devils remain in second spot despite coming under pressure from Chelsea.

Lingard had scored four times in his last five games ahead of their third-round clash against Championship side Derby County at Old Trafford.

The 25-year-old started Manchester United’s cup clash and managed to end the visitors’ resistance when he fired a superb long-range strike past Scott Carson with six minutes to go.

Summer signing Romelu Lukaku polished off a 2-0 victory to ensure the Red Devils are in the pot for the fourth-round draw.

Former England striker Lineker spoke in glowing terms about Lingard following the versatile midfielder’s stunning goal in the FA Cup.

“It was another cracking goal from Jesse Lingard, his fifth in the last six games. What a finish and what a player he’s turning into,” Lineker told BBC Sport.

The Manchester United star has now scored against Derby, Everton, Burnley and Leicester City in his last five games.

The Red Devils youth product has netted 11 times and has made four assists in 26 appearances in all competitions this season.

The 20-time English champions are next in Premier League action against Stoke on Monday 15 January.
