The Red Devils slumped to a goalless draw with Southampton in their last Premier League game in 2017 after Manchester United struggled to break down Mauricio Pellegrino’s Saints side.
The 20-time English champions have now drawn their last three Premier League games to raise questions about Manchester United’s poor performances under Mourinho in recent weeks.
Even Paul Pogba’s return to the Red Devils side hasn’t managed to improve Manchester United’s fortunes after 2-2 stalemates with Leicester City and Burnley before a goalless draw with Southampton.
Manchester United have been lacking a clear leader in the side since defensive trio Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand left Old Trafford following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.
Former Red Devils midfielder Hargreaves would like to see Manchester United sign a real leader to improve the communication in Mourinho’s team.
“I think they need another leader on the pitch,” Hargreaves told BT Sport.
“The game just got away from them against Southampton. With five minutes left the tempo changed and there was a bit of urgency but it was the 90th minute.
“They’ve got silent leaders. De Gea is relatively quiet and Pogba is so gifted, but not the most vocal…”
Manchester United haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013 when Ferguson was still in charge of the Red Devils team.
The 20-time English champions have signed seven players since Mourinho was appointed as Louis van Gaal’s successor in 2016.
Manchester United are in third place in the Premier League table.
