The France international was used largely in a centre-forward role during his spell at AS Monaco and during his first season at Manchester United under Louis van Gaal.
However, the Dutchman’s successor Mourinho has hesitated to use Martial in a central role despite the Frenchman scoring 19 times in the 2015-16 season.
Martial struggled to earn the trust of the Portuguese coach last term but the 21-year-old appears to have turned a corner in recent months.
The Manchester United No11 has netted 11 times in 32 games in all competitions for the Red Devils so far this season.
Martial could face even stiffer competition for a starting spot following the arrival of Alexis Sanchez in a swap deal from Arsenal last week.
Former Chelsea winger Nevin has urged Mourinho to consider using Martial in a centre forward role.
“Martial is a fabulous player. He is stuck out on the wing. But he is not the winger,” Nevin told Irish radio station Newstalk.
“He has so much more to offer. If you have Martial centre and Sanchez on either side with another two, I think you’ve got a very scary attack there.
“You may get more out of Lukaku.”
Martial moved to Manchester United in a £36m deal from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco in the 2015 summer transfer window.
The Red Devils snapped up Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelof last summer.
