Ex-defender explains why Jose Mourinho doesn’t trust Man United flop
Danny Higginbotham sheds light on why Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has questions about Henrikh Mkhitaryan
Danny Higginbotham believes Jose Mourinho has concerns about Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s ability to carry out his defensive duties for the Manchester United team.
The Armenia international has been linked with a surprise exit at Old Trafford in the January transfer window following a difficult couple of months for the Manchester United midfielder.
Mkhitaryan made a bright start to the season with five assists in their opening three Premier League games but the attacking midfielder has struggled with a lack of confidence and a loss of form.
The 28-year-old has to wait almost two months to secure a place in Mourinho’s starting line-up before he was restored to the starting XI for a 0-0 draw with Southampton on Boxing Day.
The Manchester United number 22 has been linked with a return to Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, while Serie A side Inter Milan are rumoured to be keen to bring Mkhitaryan to the San Siro on loan.
Mkhitaryan has also been linked with a potential move to Arsenal as part of a deal that could see Alexis Sanchez completed a switch to Manchester United.
Sky Sports News pundit Higginbotham explained why Mourinho has his doubts about Mkhitaryan.
“I think Mourinho wants every single player in that team to have defensive duties. Mkhitaryan is absolutely brilliant going forward but it could be the defensive side of things where it’s a little bit questionable,” Higginbotham told Sky Sports News on Saturday.
Mkhitaryan moved to Manchester United in a £30m deal from Dortmund in 2016.
