Gary Neville urges Man United to rival Man City for talented 23-year-old defender
The Man United legend wants the Red Devils to rival Manchester City for the signing of Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte
Gary Neville has called upon Manchester United to rival Manchester City in the race to sign Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte.
The Citizens are rumoured to be interested in signing the highly-rated 23-year-old centre-half in the January transfer window.
Pep Guardiola could do with another centre-half to provide cover for injury-prone Vincent Kompany and England international John Stones, who returned from a serious problem for Manchester City’s 4-3 loss to Liverpool FC.
Former Manchester United defender Neville gained an in-depth knowledge of Spanish football during his brief spell in charge of La Liga side Valencia.
The Red Devils managed to beat Premier League leaders Manchester City to the signature of Chile international Alexis Sanchez on Monday evening.
Neville is hoping that Manchester United can pull off another transfer coup and sign Laporte ahead of Manchester City.
Neville wrote on Twitter: “In my very short time in Spain we played them 3 times ! This lad can play! Get in United … 😂”
Neville added: “Yes. Its really hard to get players out of Bilbao and costly but this lad is a very good player …”
Laporte has scored 10 times in 209 appearances in all competitions for Athletic Bilbao.
The 23-year-old has represented France at youth level but the centre-half is still waiting to earn his first senior cap.
Manchester United signed Swedish centre-half Victor Lindelof in a £30m deal from Portuguese giants Benfica last summer.
The Red Devils are in second place in the Premier League table but 12 points behind current leaders Manchester City.
