The Sun is reporting that the Red Devils want to open contract negotiations with the Spanish shot-stopper in a bid to fend off interest in the goalkeeper from Real Madrid.
De Gea is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world and has earned plenty of praise for his performances for the Red Devils so far this season.
The 27-year-old is out of contract in the summer of 2019 but Manchester United do have the option of extending his deal by a further 12 months.
The same report says that Manchester United are ready to ramp up his £120,000 a week wages to as much as £300,000 a week, to put him level with Paul Pogba at Old Trafford.
That would make both of them the highest-paid players at the club.
Manchester United are said to be ready to hand De Gea anything up to a five-year contract to keep him at Old Trafford for the long-term.
Meanwhile, Manchester United are currently preparing for their home clash against Stoke City in the Premier League on Monday night.
