Manchester United are set to battle with rivals Manchester City for the signature of Brazilian midfielder Fred, according to reports in the British media.

The Daily Star is reporting that the two Manchester clubs remain keen on signing the 24-year-old midfielder, who currently plays for Shakhtar Donetsk.

The same story says that both Arsenal and Tottenham have shown an interest in the Brazilian, but that the race for his signature is now likely to come down to a straight shootout between the two Manchester rivals.

The report claims that Manchester United and Arsenal were previously leading the chase to sign Fred, but that it now looks to be a two-horse race between Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho’s clubs.

It remains to be seen whether a move will happen before Wednesday’s transfer deadline, but the same report says that the two Premier League clubs will revive their interest in the summer if not.

Manchester United have already been busy in the January transfer window after they allowed Henrikh Mkhitaryan to move to Arsenal as part of the deal which saw Alexis Sanchez join the Red Devils.

Meanwhile, Mourinho is currently preparing his side for their crunch trip to Tottenham on Wednesday night in the Premier League.
