Jose Mourinho told Man United need ‘crucial’ January signing
Manchester United need to sign a 'real centre-half' in the summer transfer window, Tony Gale says
Manchester United need to sign a real leader at centre-half to improve Jose Mourinho’s defence, Tony Gale has suggested.
The Red Devils have struggled with injury problems at the back once again this season following fitness issues with Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Chris Smalling last term.
Mourinho attempted to tackle the problem with the addition of Benfica centre-half Victor Lindelof in a £30m deal in the summer transfer window.
The Sweden international has made a muted start to his Manchester United career with some shaky performances in the opening months of the Premier League season.
Lindelof, though, has managed to establish himself as a first-team regular during the festive schedule with some promising displays.
However, former West Ham star Gale believes Manchester United need to sign a centre-half in the January transfer window.
“A centre-back would be crucial. They need a real centre-back, a real leader. They need real quality [in that position,” Gale told Sky Sports News on Thursday.
Manchester United are long way off Premier League leaders Manchester City in a one-sided title race.
The Red Devils will take on La Liga side Sevilla in the Champions League last 16 next month.
The 20-time English champions suffered a surprise 2-1 loss to Championship side Bristol City in the League Cup third round.
Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last season.
