Gary Lineker reacts to reports Man United want Mkhitaryan-Sanchez swap deal
The Spurs legend issues his backing for a proposed swap deal involving Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez and Manchester United midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan
Gary Lineker has endorsed a potential a potential swap deal involving Arsenal striker Alexis Sanchez and Manchester United midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
The Red Devils have reportedly entered the race to sign the Chile international from struggling Arsenal in the January transfer window despite reports suggesting Sanchez will head to Manchester City this month or next summer.
The 29-year-old was reportedly close to a move to Manchester City last summer but the proposed deal fell through after Arsenal were unable to sign AS Monaco forward Thomas Lemar in a £92m switch on transfer deadline day.
Manchester United have been linked with a potential bid of Sanchez’s team-mate Mesut Ozil, who is in the same contractual situation with the South American forward.
Jose Mourinho is rumoured to have been told that any January deals for a playmaker would have to be funded by the sale of Armenia international Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
The former Borussia Dortmund midfielder has struggled to make a lasting impression at Old Trafford since his £30m move to Manchester United from the Bundesliga club in 2016.
Reports on Thursday suggested that the Red Devils could look to beat Manchester City to the signing of Sanchez and use Mkhitaryan as bait to help reach an agreement with Arsenal.
Former England and Tottenham striker Lineker took to Twitter to issue his backing for the proposed swap deal.
Lineker wrote on Twitter: “Interesting turn of events with Manchester United coming in for Sanchez, with Mkhitaryan going the other way. Can see the appeal for both clubs. United get a top player, and stop him going to City, and Arsenal get an excellent footballer in place of someone who wants away.”
