The Red Devils recruited Alexis Sanchez on Monday evening following his switch to Old Trafford in a swap deal that saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan complete a move to Arsenal.
Sanchez was thrown straight into the Manchester United team on Friday night and the January signing made two assists in a 4-0 win over League Two side Yeovil Town on Friday night.
The 29-year-old will undoubtedly add more goals and more assists to the Red Devils side given his brilliant performances during three and a half seasons at Arsenal.
Manchester United are in second place in the Premier League table but 12 points behind runaway leaders Manchester City.
Jose Mourinho signed a new contract extension on Thursday evening as the Red Devils boss looks to build a team capable of challenging Manchester City.
And Merson is confident that Mourinho will spend big in the summer transfer market to ensure that Manchester United close the gap on their derby rivals.
“They will go in the market again in the summer,” Merson told The Debate on Sky Sports on Thursday night.
“I think it will be game on next season. If I was a Man United fan, I’d be looking forward to it.”
Mourinho has signed eight players since he took over the reins at Manchester United from Louis van Gaal back in 2016.
The Red Devils won the League Cup and the Europa League in Mourinho’s first season in charge.
